The respective functions of the Permanent Commissions shall be as follows:

Catechetics

Catechetics

  • To prepare an AEC Catechetical Directory.
  • To assist in the publication of local catechisms.
  • To assist, when requested, the organization of catechetics in a diocese.
  • To provide workshops and conferences for the continuing formation of catechists.

Communications

Communications

  • To design and facilitate formation opportunities for Catholics – Bishops, priests, religious and laity – in the spirituality and sills of communications so as to facilitate the Church in the AEC Region for the New Evangelization.
  • To promote and use the IT platform of the AEC so as to facilitate effective collaboration between the Bishops and the Commissions in an ongoing way.
  • To promote SIGNIS Caribbean as an effective means to facilitate coordination between communication departments of the Dioceses of the AEC so as to nurture the communications potential of the church in the Formation of Missionary Disciples.
  • To strengthen the capacities of dioceses to develop working relationships with the wider media in their dioceses to facilitate the evangelization of the media and development of society.
  • To develop and emplement communications plicies and guidelines for the AEC and its member dioceses.
  • To disseminate and promote trustworthy information about the Roman Catholic Church, both local and global, so as to connect Catholics with the Good News.
  • To assist the Holy See in conveying Papal Statements and addressing other Vatican media issues.
  • To provide the public with accurate information about the activities of the AEC to proclaim Christ the Saviour and lead our people to witness that Christ is the Light illuminating all issues of common concern in the Church and in the world and to communicate to the Catholic and wider public the Bishops’ response to such.
  • To carry out other communications tasks assigned by the Bishops of the AEC.

  • To examine all questions pertaining to faith, morals and canon law referred to it by the Holy See or by the AEC.
  • To promote studies and conferences on questions of faith and morals.
  • To examine books published in the AEC region.
  • To dialogue with Cultures.
  • To develop the Church’s dialogue with the contemporary world.
  • To promote the study of the problem of unbelief and religious indifference.
  • To foster the encounter with those who do not believe in God or who profess no religion.
  • To organize and participate in study congresses in this field by means of experts.
  • To preserve the Church’s patrimony of art and history.
  • To evangelize the culture of the AEC region.

Ecumenism

  • To foster the visible unity of all Christians.
  • To motivate and guide ecumenical dialogue and cooperation.
  • To produce an ecumenical directory for the AEC Region.

Education

  • Governance: Develop and provide a Governance Framework to facilitate the prudent management of our diocesan education institutions.
  • Values: Develop and provide a values framework in keeping with the Gospel and Catholic tradition to transform Catholic institutions to faith communities of living witnesses.
  • Formation: Develop and provide a formation framework so that our Catholic education institutions will be proficient in forming this generation into Disciples of Christ and good citizens.
  • Curriculum: Develop and provide a curriculum framework and classroom management competencies to ensure achievement of high standards of learning so that each child, especially the most vulnerable, can achieve their full potential.

Evangelization and Mission

Evangelization and Mission

  • To animate the Dioceses through workshops, conferences etc.
  • To promote, facilitate and support New Evangelization initiatives by AEC dioceses.
  • To facilitate the establishment and/or development of an evangelization commission in each diocese.
  • To facilitate cooperation and collaboration among the dioceses through the regular meetings of chairpersons of diocesan evangelization commissions.
  • To provide material and human resources for dioceses in their evangelization activities.
  • To assist dioceses in the formation of missionaries for the region.

Family and Life

Family and Life

  • To promote the pastoral care and apostolate of the family.
  • To assist the family to fulfill its role of education, evangelization, sanctification and mission.
  • To animate the family to defend human life from the many attacks of the “culture of death” (contraception, abortion, euthanasia, sterilization, drugs, pornography, violence).
  • To support dioceses in their protection of minors from abuse through programmes such as Virtus.

Finance

  • To have oversight over the AEC’s finances promoting good and sound financial management of the Conference’s finances based on Gospel Values.
  • To embrace a financial management that is accountable and transparent.
  • To explore ways in which the AEC can become more financially sustainable and thus capable of funding its various ministries and activities.
  • To strengthen the capacities of dioceses in the Conference to follow a financial management system that is Gospel oriented, just, accountable and transparent.
  • To oversee the annual budget and auditor’s reports of the AEC Secretariat and the various Permanent Commissions and Ad Hoc Committees prior to presenting them to the Permanent Board for approval at the Plenary Session.

Justice and Peace

  • To diffuse the social teaching of the Church, especially as it affects the world of work.
  • To promote human development and defend human rights.
  • To collaborate with all organizations and associations which are dedicated to the promotion of justice and peace.
  • To sensitize people concerning peace, especially on the occasion of the annual World Day of Peace.
  • To consider Pre- and Post–Disaster preparedness. To assess the environmental impact of new developmental trends in the region, especially on the quality of life of the people.
  • To study, develop and promote the concept of the integrity of creation and stewardship.
  • To pastorally analyze the relationship between poverty and the destruction of the natural environment.
  • To foster respect and appreciation for the special relationship between the environment and our indigenous peoples.

Laity

  • To promote the participation of the laity in all aspects of the life and mission of the Church either in ecclesial organizations or as individuals.

Migrants and Tourism

  • To provide spiritual and material help to migrants, sailors, fishermen, airline employees and passengers, tourists, refugees and displaced persons.
  • To study the impact of tourism on the socio–cultural life of the region.
  • To positively promote eco-tourism.
  • To study, develop and promote the concept of the integrity of creation and stewardship.
  • To pastorally analyze the relationship between poverty and the destruction of the natural environment.
  • To foster respect and appreciation for the special relationship between the environment and our indigenous peoples.

Vocations

VOCATIONS

  • Promotes education, resources, networking and support to its Directors of Vocations and others involved in Vocations Ministry.
  • Recommends that Arch/Dioceses establish and sustain Vocations Committees in every parish of the AEC.
  • Ensures that Arch/Dioceses plan and execute promotional activities, especially the Vocations Week in January targeting students in Secondary Schools and Universities and a second Vocations Week beginning with Good Shepherd Sunday and targeting Parish Communities and Primary Schools.
  • Ensures that there is promotion of vocations at every AEC Youth Assembly.
  • Establishes and maintains a page on the AEC Website.
  • Offers training for Diocesan Vocations Directors.
  • Encourage and ensure all Dioceses of the AEC to take full advantage of social communications, especially the new media, for the purpose of evangelization and the promotion of vocations.
  • Ensure that Arch/Dioceses throughout the AEC use the standard discernment and admission process.

Youth

  • To foster participation of youth in the life and mission of the Church.
  • To examine in depth the teachings of the Church.
  • To foster reflection on social problems and to promote the solidarity of youth in responding.
