Deadly Shooting in Capesterre-Belle-Eau: The Catholic Church in Guadeloupe Expresses Its Deep Sorrow and Renews Its Call for a Collective Response to Violence
Basse-Terre, July 1, 2026
It is with profound emotion that Bishop Philippe Guiougou, Bishop of Guadeloupe, learned of the shooting that occurred on the evening of June 30 in Capesterre-Belle-Eau, which claimed the lives of two women and left several others injured, including a child.
In these painful circumstances, he extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and assures the injured of his prayers.
Once again, our department is deeply wounded by violence that strikes indiscriminately, leaving behind shattered families, grieving loved ones, and a profoundly wounded society.
This new tragedy compels us all to reflect on the growing normalization of violence and the circulation of firearms in Guadeloupe.
As early as June 2025, Bishop Philippe Guiougou called for the mobilization of everyone in response to this deadly spiral:
“Together, regardless of our political convictions, religious beliefs, or social standing, we must express our indignation at these tragedies that continue to repeat themselves.”
He wrote these words in a message addressed to the faithful and to all the people of God throughout our islands.
This statement echoes the powerful appeal for life launched in January 2026 by the diocesan network Lannaj Jeunes Pros, urging people to awaken their consciences and encouraging everyone to become artisans of peace. Today, that message is more relevant than ever.
The Catholic Church in Guadeloupe today renews its call for a collective awakening.
No community should become accustomed to seeing bloodshed in this way. The fight against violence is not solely the responsibility of public institutions—it is the responsibility of every individual.
Families, educators, associations, religious communities, elected officials, law enforcement, members of the judiciary, healthcare professionals, prevention agencies, and every citizen are called to contribute to building a society where life is protected and respected.
Today more than ever, Bishop Philippe Guiougou invites every woman and every man of goodwill to reject fatalism, defend the sacred dignity of every human life, and work—each according to his or her own role—to build a Guadeloupean society that is more fraternal, more just, and more peaceful.
May the Lord welcome the deceased into His peace, comfort the grieving families, and grant our people the strength never to abandon hope.
