In an age marked by shifting values and moral confusion, Archbishop Gabriel Malzaire reminds us that forming a good conscience is everyone’s responsibility. In his reflection, “The Architects of Conscience Formation,” he highlights four key builders: parents, the Church, schools, and society.
The Archbishop notes that parents are the first and most influential teachers of conscience. Through example, discipline, and love, they lay the moral foundation upon which all other influences build. Faith must be lived at home, not only taught.
The Church, he explains, sustains and nourishes this foundation. By preaching the Gospel, celebrating the sacraments, and fostering community life, the Church provides the moral compass that helps the faithful discern right from wrong and live according to Christ’s example.
Schools also share in this sacred duty. Education must go beyond academic excellence to include moral and spiritual formation. Teachers become partners in shaping hearts and minds, encouraging students to think critically, act justly, and care for others.
Finally, society—through media, culture, and institutions—has a profound effect on moral development. Archbishop Malzaire warns that when societal influences contradict Christian values, young people can become confused or disoriented. Hence, every sector of society must work together to promote truth, justice, and compassion.
Archbishop Malzaire calls for collaboration among all four “architects,” reminding us that conscience formation is a shared mission. When parents, Church, schools, and society work in harmony, they produce men and women of integrity, faith, and love—citizens capable of transforming the world.
