Bishop Francis Alleyne OSB of Georgetown celebrated the 20th anniversary of his Episcopal Ordination January 30 with a 5 p.m. Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam, Georgetown.
Born December 3, 1951, in Pointe-a-Pierre, south Trinidad, Bishop Alleyne entered religious life at the age of 21, joining the Benedictine Abbey at Mount St Benedict, Tunapuna, Trinidad.
A Catholic Standard report said he was professed a member of the Order of Saint Benedict December 8, 1975, and was ordained to the priesthood July 7, 1985, spending a total of 30 years at the monastery.
During the last eight of those years, he served as Abbot. At the end of his mandate as Abbot, he was appointed Bishop of Georgetown by Pope John Paul II November 10, 2003, succeeding Bishop Benedict Singh who retired earlier that year.
His Episcopal Ordination took place Friday, January 30, 2004, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Brickdam. The Principal Consecrator was Archbishop Edward Joseph Gilbert CSsR of Port of Spain, and the Principal Co-Consecrators were Archbishop Lawrence Burke SJ of Nassau, Bahamas, and Bishop Emeritus Benedict Singh of Georgetown.
