Participants from across the Antilles Episcopal Conference (AEC) took part in the virtual conversation “Love Walking with Truth”: Accompaniment & Practice on Wednesday, 16th September 2026.
The session continued the conversation on the AEC Pastoral Letter on Sexual and Gender Identity, focusing on Chapter 3 and the Appendix, with particular attention to definitions, gender dysphoria and practical pastoral scenarios.
The discussion explored how parents, teachers, catechists and Church leaders can accompany persons experiencing questions or confusion surrounding sexual and gender identity while remaining faithful to the Church’s teaching. The importance of combining truth with compassion emerged as a central theme throughout the conversation.
Participants particularly valued the practical examples and scenarios presented during the session. One participant said the examples in the document were “very practical,” while another highlighted the simplicity of the sections addressing how to respond to questions.
The scientific information also made an impact, with participants noting the importance of having both scientific and Church perspectives when engaging young people. One participant highlighted the clarification surrounding sex determination at conception, while another emphasized the importance of addressing contemporary messages that may conflict with the Church’s understanding of human identity.
For several participants, the session reinforced the importance of responding with pastoral love and care while guiding people towards truth. One participant summarized the message they would share with their Diocese: “Never mind your confusion about your identity, you are loved, you were created by love for love.”
Another participant emphasized the importance of recognizing every person’s God-given identity and treating each individual with dignity.
Participants also stressed the need for greater formation among catechists, parents and teachers so they can confidently engage the questions facing young people today.
The session provided an opportunity for participants from across the AEC to reflect, ask questions and consider how the guidance contained in the Pastoral Letter can be applied within their respective Dioceses and communities.
